Why Should I Buy A Business Rather Than Start One?

An existing business has a track record. The existing business has demonstrated that there is a need for the services they provide, and the clientele in place to continue patronizing the place.

In the pet industry, zoning is becoming an issue in most of the US; some counties are not even issuing kennel licenses. By buying an existing facility or business, you save yourself the headaches of going through hoops to get all required licenses and approvals. This applies to both businesses with real estate and to facilities which lease a space. As dog care facilities are moving into the cities, local government is putting restrictions on where they can exist, making it difficult to find a suitable location. When you buy an existing business, the zoning and licenses come with it and you can get right into running the place, instead of spending time on looking for one.

Financial records are available along with other information on the business. Most Sellers will stay and train a new owner and some will also supply financing. These last two are important considerations. Finding someone who will teach you the intricacies of their facility (especially if you’re new to the industry), introduce you to their clients, and who is also willing to finance the sale can make all the difference.

In some cases, a business loan can be obtained, if the business is generating enough cash flow. Teija works with three lenders who invest in the pet industry, and she is often able to get financing for an acquisition.
